Chat with the Noble Dead—TONIGHT!

We avoided posting notice of this until the last moment, as we weren’t fully certain if either of us could make it. With the holidays upon us, and a novel deadline looming ever nearer, our schedule was just too uncertain. But…

Over on Facebook, and moderated by Jenifer Butler, the fan group known as The Noble Dead will be hosting a FaceBook chat session for all fans of the Noble Dead Saga. The session begins at 9PM EST (6PM PST).

J.C. has confirmed that he will be in attendance for the first hour plus. He will not be providing spoilers for the coming books or the saga’s future; he might be willing to talk a little about S3B1: Between Their Worlds, with its official release in hardcover a little over two weeks away.

For those who have not finished all current books, be aware that this is an open discussion of all books to date; you may run into spoilers. If you’re interested in an evening’s hangout with other Noble Dead fans, drop by and see what’s up.

Q&A: Books/Series [Character]

Q&A: Writing (World-Building)

Overall, this is the sort of topic that’s appropriate for what’s coming our way in the near future. We won’t dig too deep but rather answer a basic question around the edges. World-building is most especially a concern — sometimes a misleading obsession — for writers in the premise genres of SF, Science Fantasy, Fantasy, Dark Fantasy and Horror. The trick is how much you do and keeping in mind that it’s all about the story-making, not the world-building. If the latter takes over the focus from the former, then you’ve wander astray.

As to why this topic is so appropriate, we’ll be doing a brief seminar on world-building (as well as workshopping manuscripts from a small group of writers) at the upcoming 2012 Cascade Writers Workshop. More on that coming soon. And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Q&A: Authorship [Publishing]

A lot of people have a story they want to tell, but it takes more than this to see it in a bookstore… or as an ebook via one of the online versions of a “big box” store. As a rough guess, maybe 1 in 10 people want to write down that story. A tenth of those do so, and a tenth of those finish the first draft. Maybe another tenth learn to refine it adequately, and again a tenth will get to the point of publishing it somehow. But the possibility of it being produced by a professional publishing house gets even smaller. Still, with 300,000,000+ people in the USA at present, those fractions only bring us down to 30,000 potential story-tellers who get something in print each year. That’s a lot more than actually make it to the final step…

A Feast of Thanks…

ThanksgivingIt’s time again for the harvest feast in the USA, which is late compared to other corners of the world. It’s when we all try to remember something for which to give thanks, regardless of spiritual ideology or philosophy.

At a professional level, in relation to the Noble Dead Saga, we have people abroad who deserve that as well...

Q&A: Authorship [Personal History]

Many people who end up wanting to be writers, or specifically authors, don’t start out that way. Life leads them down wandering paths, and along the journey to building a life is when such things begin to ferment. It could (and should) be said that story-making and story-telling are two different things. For an anyone working in any medium of expression, prose or otherwise, these are two different talents. When they are refined into skill sets, they must be integrated at the most intimate as well as pragmatic levels. That’s quite a feat, and some who don’t end up as “story-tellers” nonetheless begin early in life as “story-makers”… and they may not even know it…

Powell’s Authorfest Recap

All went well, and we caught up with some friends in the spare moments. A few photos were snapped along the way, so if curious, drop by the Noble Dead Saga's official Facebook page to check those out.

The photos are courtesy of authors Louise Marley and Nina Kiriki Hoffman.

The Noble Dead Saga: Book Signing: Powell’s Authorfest

Q&A: Books/Series [Research]

And we’re back again after a slight delay, though a little earlier in the catch-up than previously announced. Sometimes (as you’ve seen in our previous Q&As) the line between the perspective of readers and writers isn’t distinct. The interests of one audience leads to the other, and visa versa. So it is, this time out, with a peek into the past. Appropriate considering that this coming January 2012, with the release of S3B1: Between Their Worlds, we’ll be ten years into the saga from the readers’ side, and over twelve years for us on the writers’ side…

Q&A Delay

qa_1The latest Q&A is running late (as it should have been up this last Friday) because we've been at it hard working on the S3B2: The Dog in the Dark even as we're all waiting for S3B1: Between Their Worlds to hit the shelves. Oh, and we have to prepare for a signing tomorrow evening. The next Q&A entry should be ready and published by Monday afternoon (PST). We'll be back on schedule for this series by the following Friday.

Excerpts Failure Has Been Fixed

We heard that the Excerpts in the Books page ceased functioning. This may have happened over a week ago during some site work. All has been corrected, so if you dropped by during the last week for a read, give it another try now.

S3B1: Between Their Worlds

It’s finally here… the back cover summary for the beginning of Series 3 of the Noble Dead Saga. Select “Books” from the site’s main menu and then select “Series 3, Book 1, Between Their Worlds” in the right-hand menu on that page.

That is the last info about the book that can be released, as we all wait until January 3rd, 2012, when the book appears on the shelves. Pre-orders are available at all online venues. Links to some of those are available within the book’s information on our site. Magiere, Leesil and Chap are back!

Q&A: Writing [Collaboration]

qa_11Time once again for a couple of questions and answers. This time out, we’ll cover two related ones on a topic that often gets raised for us. As you’ll see, these questions are ones only a handful of writers could really address. No wonder they are among the top three we’re always asked.

News Options: Facebook Linkage

facebookNews linkage options for readers and other visitors have received a small update; look to the sidebar of our site(s). If you already chose your preferred method to receive our updates, you do not need to make any changes. More such convenience tweaks (and expansion of options) are planned for the near future. Stay tuned.

JC’s Haunt…

I prefer not to use the ND site for personal topics, since most don’t appeal to readers specifically, but now and then there’s an exception. I’ve been following activity on one of several Noble Dead fan pages on Facebook, aside from our own official page. A few people have looked about for art done by fans for the characters of the Noble Dead saga. Back in the early days, when we ran a small forum on our first ND web site, this type of artwork popped up now and then.

While browsing the group mentioned above, I looked up from where I sit at the dining room table (where I often write). I re-noticed one of our oldest artworks on the wall that isn’t a print from one of our books… or a general artwork we just like. It still mesmerizes me for how I…

Wait, I’m getting too far ahead. Let’s go back to the beginning…

Q&A: Writing [Character]; Media Tie-ins [Games]

qa_1For our first entry in this ongoing series, we chose both an old question from interviews [adapted] and a new one from those recently submitted by readers. We’ll try to keep things mixed up that way as often as we can. This will likely lead to further expansion and reorganization of the site’s FAQs when we have time. The title of each Q&A article will reflect the topic(s) addressed and possibly where they will be filed under old and new headings in the FAQs.

FaceBook Success

Well it looks like we finallly got it to work. You can follow news from NobleDead.org about the Noble Dead Saga (and future related books) via our official FaceBook page. Soon we'll have a link to it in the sidebar of this site.

For now, to subscribe via FaceBook, go to the official page at https://www.facebook.com/TheNobleDeadSaga and look to the bottom of the left sidebar. There you will find both the SMS and RSS subcribers links... or you can just click those linked words herein to give it a try.

Facebook

We've been struggling to get a Facebook "page" set for NobleDead.org where news summaries will show up so people can use that system as their preference for following what's happening the Noble Dead Saga and us. We are getting closer with a small break through this morning. So this post is merely a quick test, and if it works, some of the past posts should show up on the NDO page on Facebook. You can find it at https://www.facebook.com/TheNobleDeadSaga to give it a try for yourself. More later.

Q&A: In the Beginning…

We’ve been asked many questions concerning the Noble Dead saga, authorship, and fiction writing. Some have been answered in past published interviews, but most of those are out of print. Many readers have also submitted questions through our old site, and we answered through email, one by one. Time for a change…

Book Signing: Powell’s Authorfest

Barb and J.C. will attend “Authorfest” at the Beaverton Powell’s bookstore.  This is a fun event where many local SF/Fantasy authors will be in attendance and signing their books.  Since it is a bookstore (and one of our favorite local chains), of course books are on sale during the event. The store staff makes a great effort to be certain all current books by attending authors are available. Please join us if you can!

Date: Sunday 11/13/2011
Time: 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm

S3B1: Between Their Worlds

For those coming to the new site for the first time, excerpts for the coming release of Series 3, Book 1, Between Their Worlds are now available on the Books page. You can also select “Books” from the site's main menu. Once you are on that page, select the book's title in the special submenu that will appear on the site's right side. When the information for S3B1 is loaded, hit the “Excerpts” button displayed therein. The excerpts will appear in an overlay of the site, and you can use either the chapter / scene links or the reading panel's scrollbar to browse through the text.

S3B1: Between Their Worlds is on schedule for release in the first week of January 2012. Pre-orders are available now at all online venues.

S3B2: The Dog in the Dark

S3B2 has been added to the release schedule in the Books page as “pending”. This entry in the Noble Dead Saga is now in process, as we have completed the planning phase and are working on the draft.

Twitter Connected

We've finished connecting a twitter account to NobleDead.org. This is just a quick post to see if it is actually going to work.

Still Under Development

A few people have already contacted us concerning glitches in the site, such as the FAQs not working and entries vanishing instead of being revealed when clicked. Be assured that we will deal with all of this, but also remember that until you see the "we are live" post, this site is still under development. Please be patient, give us a little more time, and in the meantime, features that are missing or not yet functional here are still available at www.NobleDead.COM until the end of this month.
